A solicitor who represents his client personally in a court hearing. Although solicitors have generally been permitted to act as advocates in the magistrates' courts, until recently right of audience in the higher courts has been restricted to barristers. Now solicitors can obtain rights of audience in all courts, subject to obtaining the appropriate qualifications in advocacy and the law of evidence.
